Privacy Policy

Last updated: 21 October 2026

This policy covers the Bytey website, your Bytey account and the Bytey Chrome extension. Bytey lets you save web pages, videos and highlighted text, organise them, set reminders to revisit them, and see your saves in the Bytey app.

In short: to use Bytey you create an account with your email. The links you save and the notes you add are sent to the Bytey server so they appear in the Bytey app. Bytey does not sell your data, does not show ads and does not track your browsing.

Your Bytey account

You can create an account or sign in on this website, in the Bytey app or in the Chrome extension.

  • What you give us: your email address and a password. They are sent over a secure (HTTPS) connection to the Bytey server.
  • What this website keeps: your email and the sign-in tokens the server returns, stored in your browser (localStorage). Your password is never stored by the website.
  • Signing the extension in: when you sign in here and the Bytey extension is installed in the same browser, the website signs in once more for the extension and hands it its own sign-in tokens directly inside Chrome. Your password never reaches the extension. Signing out here signs the extension out too.

Bytey Chrome extension

What is stored on your computer

When you save something, the extension stores the following in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local):

  • The page's title, address (URL), website name, description and preview-image address
  • Text you highlighted and chose to save
  • The main text of pages you save (up to about 12,000 characters each), used only for searching your library on this computer
  • Notes, collections, favourites and reminder times you create
  • Your settings, your account email and sign-in tokens (not your password)

What is sent to the Bytey server

  • For each item you save: the page address (URL) and your note, including any text you highlighted.
  • When you edit a note or delete an item: the change, so your account stays up to date.

The page text, preview images, reminders, collections and favourites are not sent. Data is only ever sent to the Bytey server, always over HTTPS.

When the extension reads a web page

The extension reads a page only when you ask it to: when you click its toolbar icon, press its keyboard shortcut, or use its right-click menu on that page. It then reads that page's title, address, publicly available preview information (such as Open Graph tags), its main text, and any text you highlighted. It does not read pages in the background, does not see your other tabs, and does not access your browsing history.

Other network requests

When your library shows a preview image, Chrome loads that image from the website that provides it, as it would on the web page itself. Website icons come from Chrome's own local icon cache. Reminder notifications are created on your computer by Chrome.

This website

The Bytey website does not use cookies, analytics or advertising trackers. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google's servers to download them; see Google's privacy policy.

Your control over your data

  • Sign out at any time on your account page, or in the extension's Settings → Bytey account.
  • Delete items in the extension's library (they are also removed from your Bytey account), or delete all local data from Settings → Delete all data.
  • Delete your account and its server data from within the Bytey app.
  • Uninstalling the extension removes all of its locally stored data from Chrome.

Children

Bytey is not directed at children.
